Blood, as much as it may be beneficial to the body, may also have negative impacts on health. Bull blood is poisonous and Horse blood is corrosive. Althoug a priestess Aegira consumed Bulls blood for a divine experience of religious awe. Furthermore some animal blood grants increases in iron of the blood. Each animal blood has its own use and produces different effects on the body. Animal Blood is important to know about because it is beneficial and unhealthy depending on which you consume. 

Blood of animals is what first brought about the idea of biohazards in modern society. Blood can be toxic when consumed. Possible Iron overdosage may occur. Pathogens are lying in wait and HIV could occur. So yes, Blood does have drawbacks as Pliny envisions. On the other hand, blood does not cause religious phenomena nor does it have any major benefits when consumed. We do find blood very useful in blood transfusions. Chance has led Pliny to think of such assumptions. And, on many assumptions he was correct. Little developments like these has laid the stepping stones for todays medical field.
